Washington in the Late 50's

My Aunt and I recovered these images from slides that were squirelled away in my Grandfather's attic. He lived his whole life in Pennsylvania; but, these were taken on a vacation. Living in the D.C. area myself, I thought others might get as much of a kick out of these as I do.

I enjoy dreaming about those "simpler" times: Pennsylvania Avenue was open to traffic, and an abandoned backpack wouldn't bring a bomb-squad.

1

This appears to be looking Northwest from the Washington Monument. I think the center-most road is Virginia Ave.

2

The US Capitol Building.

3

Looking South across the Tidal Basin at the Jefferson Memorial.

4

Looking East, across the "Mall" at the Capitol.

5

I think this is looking down from the Washington Monument at the Tidal Basin (?)

6

It look like this was taken from "Little Island", which I've never heard of; but, if so, the bridge is the Arlington Memorial Bridge.

7

Looking West from the Washington Monument, across the Reflecting Pool and the Lincoln Memorial.

The buildings no longer exist; but, they were owned by the Navy.

8

The Washington Monument. I think the photo was taken from 17th St, looking Southwest.

9

Looking North from the Washington Monument, across the Ellipse, at the White House.

The baseball diamond looks sooooo out of place.

10

Just to give you an idea of the actual resolution of the last photo... This apparently wasn't where he was focusing; but, the detail is still amazing.

11

Looking South from the Washington Monument. The Jefferson Memorial is center, with National Airport (now called Reagan by some) behind it.

All I can say is "Wow".

12

From the Washington Monument, looking Southwest across the Potomac River at the Pentagon.

13

Still not sure where this was taken...

14

The US Capitol. The idea of a parking lot running right up to the front steps is unimaginable today.

15

Southeast from the Washington Monument.
